Your body cannot make everything it needs, so a handful of nutrients must come from food. These are the essential nutrients, and getting enough of each is the foundation of good health at every age. What essential nutrients are
An essential nutrient is one your body needs but cannot produce in sufficient amounts on its own, meaning it has to come from your diet. There are around 40 of them, and they fall into two broad groups by how much you need. Macronutrients, which you need in larger amounts, provide energy and building materials. Micronutrients, which you need in tiny amounts, act as the spark plugs and support crew for countless processes.
No single food contains everything, which is exactly why variety is the cornerstone of good nutrition. It simply means your body can make that nutrient itself from other building blocks, so you do not strictly need to eat it. The macronutrients
Macronutrients supply energy and the raw materials for your body's structures. All three are essential in the sense that a healthy diet needs them, and cutting any group to extremes usually backfires.

Water is often counted alongside these as an essential nutrient in its own right, since you need it in large amounts and cannot survive long without it.
A common mistake is to treat one macronutrient as the enemy. Very low-fat and very low-carbohydrate approaches both tend to struggle over the long term, partly because each group brings nutrients the others do not. Fat carries the fat-soluble vitamins, carbohydrate-rich plant foods carry fibre and many B vitamins, and protein foods carry iron, zinc and B12. Cutting a whole group to extremes often means quietly cutting the nutrients that travel with it, which is why balance beats elimination for most people.
The essential vitamins
Vitamins are organic compounds needed in small amounts for a huge range of jobs, from energy release to immune defence to blood clotting. They split into two families.

Because water-soluble vitamins are not stored well, they need topping up often, which is another argument for eating a range of fruit, vegetables and wholegrains most days. Cooking can also affect them. Some vitamins, particularly vitamin C and several B vitamins, are sensitive to heat and to being cooked in lots of water, which can leach them out. Light steaming, roasting or eating some produce raw helps preserve more of what is there. None of this requires a rigid system, but it explains why a plate that mixes some raw and some gently cooked foods tends to deliver a little more than one that is heavily processed or boiled to death.
The essential minerals
Minerals are inorganic elements your body uses for structure and signalling. Some, like calcium, you need in larger amounts, while others, called trace minerals, you need only in tiny quantities.

Trace minerals such as selenium, copper and manganese are needed only in the smallest amounts, but they are no less essential for it. Because they turn up across a wide range of everyday foods, most people who eat a varied diet meet their needs without ever thinking about them. This is a recurring theme with micronutrients: variety quietly does the work, so the effort is better spent widening your range of foods than tracking any individual element.
How to get them all from food
Covering every essential nutrient sounds daunting, but it comes down to a few habits rather than tracking dozens of numbers.
- Eat a variety of colours: different pigments in fruit and vegetables tend to signal different vitamins and antioxidants.
- Include all the food groups: wholegrains, protein foods, dairy or fortified alternatives, and plenty of produce over the week.
- Choose wholegrains and legumes often: they quietly deliver fibre, B vitamins, iron, magnesium and zinc together.
- Include a source of healthy fat: oily fish, nuts, seeds and olive oil support absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
Balanced eating patterns such as the Mediterranean diet are popular with dietitians precisely because they naturally deliver a wide spread of essential nutrients without any calorie counting or restriction.
Tip: Aim for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and vary them week to week. Rotating what you buy, rather than eating the same three items, is one of the simplest ways to widen your nutrient intake.
Who may need supplements
Most people can meet their needs from a varied diet, and food should always be the first port of call because it delivers nutrients in combinations that work together. That said, some groups are more likely to benefit from specific supplements, ideally on professional advice.

- Vitamin B12: those following a vegan diet generally need a reliable B12 source or supplement.
- Pregnancy: folic acid and sometimes iron are commonly recommended under medical guidance.

Nutrition attracts a lot of noise, so it helps to clear up a few persistent misunderstandings.
- More is not always better: for many micronutrients, meeting the target is enough, and very high doses can be useless or even harmful.
